Hannah and our neighbor friend, Millie (6), came back to our house from playing at hers. They had a little baggie full of these green and red berries. I asked them where they got these berries, and Millie told me they were from her garden in her back yard. They said that they were just "collecting" them, not eating them. I was a little concerned but when Millie said they came from her garden, but thought if they came from her garden, they must be fine.. I don't really know my berries, and it kind of bothered me but I thought, as long as they don't eat them, and they stay in the bag, maybe its fine. Not 2 seconds later I just got the feeling that they should throw them away. I hollered for the girls, and went to find them. Not even 10 seconds later Hannah started screaming that Brady was eating the berries. I freaked out and ran and made him spit them out. I didn't know weather he swallowed any or not. I decided that I should probably call Millie's dad just to make sure he knew what kind of berries they were, and that they were okay. I got him on the phone and told him about these berries. He had no idea there were any berries in his garden. He said he would go out and look. Less than 10 minutes later my doorbell was ringing like crazy. I ran to the door and it was Millie's dad, panting from running his fastest all the way to my house. As soon as the door opened he said, Call Poison Control, these berries are DEADLY!!!!! HOLY!! Talk about a PANIC!!!! I don't know the number to poison control... to be honest, I don't think I have ever thought about it! I called 911 and they immediately transferred me to Poison Control. Right before Rusty came running over, Brady and I got in a little 2 year old temper tantrum argument and he hit me so I sent him to his room. At this moment that I am on the phone with 911/poison control, Brady is in his room crying hysterically. Now that I knew these were "deadly" I immediately wondered if his crying was from something other than being put in time out. As I was talking to the 911 person, I ran up to his room.. he was fine.. just mad at me.
They transferred me to poison control and I explained to the lady what was going on. I don't even know the name of the berry at the moment... I will look it up and find a picture and post it on here. It is a berry that is native to Utah, and I guess pretty common. It grows like a weed... anywhere.
She said that it can be deadly, but it takes 50 or 60 berries to be deadly. They have a sweet taste to them, so kids do find them appetizing. She said that 1 or 2 probably would have no affect on my little 2 year old, a few more than that would just cause flu like symptoms. Brady was fine, no symptoms at all.
I was actually really impressed with Poison Control. They called back 2 times that day to make sure he was okay, then once the next day.
Poison Control-1-800-222-1222
I just found the name and picture....
They are called Night Shade Berries...
They are green in the spring, and red in the summer and fall.. Watch for them!!
Needless to say, Millie's dad pulled the plant up and got rid of it!!
